Green Thumb – How to care for Bougainvilleas

Nyambura.co - Green Thumb

Bougainvilleas are native to South America and was most likely brought to India by the British. Jeanne Baré who disguised herself as a man to join a naval expedition around the globe, was in all likelihood the first European to document them.

Bougainvilleas are relatively pest-free and easy to care for. They thrive in abundant sunlight and in dry climate. They need to be watered everyday but only if the soil dries out at the end of each day. If winters are particularly harsh where you live, bring them in until the weather improves.

Organic Manure can be added once in few months to nourish the soil and help the plant flower throughout the year. Bougainvillea also take well to being ‘guided’ to climb trellises or trees even and form a beautiful curtain of vibrant flowers.
